October/November 2019

October/November 2019

My daughter Kate was born on bonfire night and the colours, sights and smells of the season always make me feel nostalgic. It’s a wonderfully evocative time of year, perfect for taking time out from the wedding planning to relax and enjoy the great outdoors before the hectic festive period and bleak winter weather kicks in.

There’s plenty of inspiration to be found all around us. East Anglia is blessed with glorious countryside, woods and forests, so why not grab your partner, pull on your wellies and head out for a good forage? Be inspired by the russet tones of falling leaves and the rich, berry shades of plump seasonal fruits for your big-day palette. Conkers, acorns, twigs, brambles and other finds can provide a wealth of natural decorative material too. Think ornamental gourds in different shapes and sizes, pumpkins and richly coloured seasonal blooms like dahlias and chrysanthemums for your centrepieces and reception décor. To find out what local experts have to say on making the most of this time of year, turn to page 90.

As well as autumnal inspiration, this issue is packed with ideas, latest trends and top tips for all things wedding-related from boho bridal fashion and fabulous local venues to showstopping cakes created by some of the region’s finest. And with the nation currently in the grip of baking fever, here at County Weddings HQ we’re keeping Tuesday nights free for our weekly fix of cake triumphs, catastrophes and innuendo courtesy of The Great British Bake Off #GBBO.

Alpheton Hall Barns

Alpheton Hall Barns

Alpheton Hall Barns offers the perfect mix of ancient and vintage farm buildings; perfect for a rustic chic theme. Think Medieval honey-coloured oak beams, lime plaster walls, big barn doors and corrugated tin roofs, with all the comforts of sheep-wool insulation, modern heating, as well as high-tech lighting and sound systems. Bursting with character, the black featherboarded barns provide the ideal blank-canvas venue to add your own personal touch for a truly individual big day.

Surrounded by fields, next to Alpheton Church, there’s a wealth of outdoor areas for fabulous photos, al fresco drinks receptions, entertainment and evening food. The Wedding Garden has its own brick terrace and space for garden games and there’s a courtyard complete with wood-fired pizza oven.

You can tie the knot in the West Barn, with its handmade oak ceremony table, full aisle and stone floor, followed by a reception in the South Barn. The largest and oldest of the two, its origins date back to the 10th century. The barns are connected internally, so there’s no risk of guests getting wet if the weather’s bad. Complete with a bar area, room for a band or disco, as well as tables and seating for the wedding breakfast, it provides a flexible space for parties of 60 up to 250 family and friends.

We love... the heart-shaped Confetti Garden with its tree-trunk log seat and wildflowers.
