December/January 2020/2021

Personally I love this time of year; nights in snuggled around an open fire, mulled wine simmering on the hob, and old films on the TV. I’m a great fan of ‘hygge’, a Danish ethos that, loosely translated, is all about simplifying things and enjoying the moment, bringing a mix of cosiness, charm and comfort into our lives. Not just for the festive season, but a great idea for everyday life and never more relevant than in the current challenging times.

With many couples having to postpone their weddings, some couples are opting to tie the knot regardless with just immediate family and friends, followed by a full-on party later once restrictions have eased. Intimate weddings have always been an option and can be just as special as large-scale affairs, particularly in the winter, with romantic candlelight and a wealth of inviting indoor wedding spaces available at venues across the region. Downsizing your wedding plans doesn’t have to mean compromising on the look and feel of your day. What’s more, we’re here to help you navigate the hurdles and plan your day, your way, with useful tips and advice from local experts on page 96.

Flowers are a major part of the wedding décor and can transform anything from the smallest wedding to the grandest venue. To celebrate the wealth of creative talent on the doorstep we showcase a gallery of wow-factor big-day blooms starting on page 57. Looking ahead, from page 63 we also shine a light on what’s set to be hot in wedding catering for all the lovely weddings to come!

Have a very merry Christmas and happy New Year, see you in 2021!

Kimberley Hall

This versatile venue is perfect for all seasons and caters for weddings large and small. With a wealth of magical spaces, it oozes character and charm, from the majestic entrance hall with its magnificent staircase and the light and elegant Music Room to the dramatic spiral staircase with its domed ceiling and the octagonal China Room. With direct access to the garden and stylish West Wing entertainment area there’s something to suit a range of different wedding themes.

Built in 1712 on the ‘hill’ of Downham, the views are breathtaking. Overlooking a huge lake and private park designed by the famous 18th-century English landscape architect Capability Brown, there’s a wealth of one-of-a-kind photo opportunities. The house with its classical redbrick frontage is full of character with standout architectural features; a picture lit up at night in a symphony of colour.

You can tie the knot with up to 130 guests in the Music Room with its grand pianos, decorative fireplace and impressive arched window looking out on to the garden. Ideal for intimate celebrations, it can be set up for the wedding breakfast too with candle-lit tables, festive decorations and a blazing log fire to create a welcoming cosy feel.

Alternatively, the chic West Wing with its state-of-the-art illuminated bar is the perfect place to dine and dance. The double-height Talman Room, seats 130 guests and for after-dinner guests there’s additional space upstairs in the sumptuous lounge with its comfy sofas. Great as a chill-out area you can watch the party below from the balcony and enjoy the sophisticated lighting and laser system and giant rotating mirror ball in action.
