The festive season is a hectic time for most of us; planning, shopping and prepping for Christmas and the New Year celebrations. It’s easy to get caught up in all the hurly burly and sometimes miss out on the important stuff, like spending time with family and friends and enjoying a glass of fizz or three!
It’s always been a big deal in our house with holly and ivy everywhere, a real tree (you can’t beat the natural scent) and all the trimmings. There was a time when I was hell-bent on making everything myself from the cards and present tags, to holly wreaths and table decorations, and that’s without even starting on the food. Now I’m older and wiser, I try to be kinder to myself and let go of many of the tasks that cause me more stress than pleasure and just stick to the things I do best, like knocking up untold batches of mince pies and making a mean turkey soup!
It’s a bit like a wedding really; playing to your strengths and not sweating the small stuff is always sound advice, and something I’ve certainly taken to heart. The winter months offer a wealth of inspiration to get creative with the big-day décor and venue styling, but if you’re time poor or not the creative type, don’t worry – call in the experts instead to save time, stress or costly mistakes.
We’re here to help with a Santa’s sack full of tips, advice and local suppliers, including cool seasonal decorations (page 63), wintry colour palettes (page 71) and winter wedding tips from local experts (page 97).
Enjoy! | |

Kimbolton Castle
Be king and queen for the day in your very own castle at this one-of-a-kind wedding venue. The earliest known castle in Kimbolton, it boasts a fascinating history. Some of the Tudor remains are still visible and the many outstanding features include a collection of fine Pellegrini murals. Approached by a winding tree-lined mall, the castle is set in 120 acres of parkland and fields, complete with a picturesque lake and pond. Wedding parties enjoy exclusive use of the four main state rooms. Ceremonies are held in The Saloon, which is then transformed for the evening reception with space for up to 250 loved ones. Wedding breakfasts for 125 friends and family are catered for in the White Hall.
